Fundamentals of Electrical Safety in Construction
1 hour 30 minutes
Learn about safe practices for operation and maintenance of electric power distribution systems on your construction site.
Electrical operation and maintenance work involving substations and switchgear presents a number of potential workplace hazards. Switchgear, fuses, surge arresters, capacitors, instrument and power transformers, and associated electrical distribution equipment are inherently dangerous. This information will help you manage an effective safety program for electrical workers.
• You will be able to describe how to safely manage protective devices within the system.
• You will be able to recognize how to safely manage fuses which can be subject to partial melting or damage by currents that might not have been of sufficient magnitude to blow the fuse.
• You will be able to discuss substation safety issues and how to safely manage a protected area for switching power circuits including transforming power from one voltage to another.
• You will be able to explain how to manage power switching operations involving opening or closing a power switch that can expose the electrical worker to some degree of hazard.
